Ole Store, WCAL…..

December 21, 2004

What do they have in common? They represent change, and sometimes we hate it. I work at the Minnesota Department of Education in Roseville, and no less than three people have asked me today about the closing of the Ole Store. While nobody has asked about WCAL, the sentiment is still there. Change happens, but now what? Bob Stangler made the call to close down the Ole Store. I’m sad about that, but Bob had the facts and knew what it took to keep that building open. I respect that.

As a Northfield School Board member, I must remember this while we plow ahead with budget reductions. It is not easy to have programs reduced or eliminated. It means real things to real people, sometimes even the loss of a job.

The job of a board member is to back up far enough to see a bigger picture. Will this budget cut mean a better program for kids next year? Will the elimination of this position guarantee more dollars for whole system? Will kids benefit from the actions I take today? I hope fellow bloggers let me know what their priorities are. This medium is a way to communicate directly without the need to appear at a particular place or time.

Blogging! Untapped Potential

December 12, 2004

I am thinking about the typical Northfield School Board meeting, held on alternate Monday evening at 7:30. I can’t help but think, as I see the “inviting” array of technology (“Approach the microphone and be heard.”)that it is terrifically daunting to appear at a certain time and speak when offered a specific technology. The blog offers an entirely different medium for people who do not have 7:30pm as an available option, or who are moving in a different technological direction.

I spent last Thursday at my evening book club, with long time friends. I mentioned that I was going to leave there to talk about blogging. Silence followed, and among a group of women who are very verbal and in the know. Only one had viewed my northfield.org website. I’m pretty sure they all voted for me…. so where is the potential for blogging?

With people I have not met. With people who have something to say about the operations of the schools and who are not heard in the usual media methods. Those are the folks I want to hear from… who have an opinion but are not heard in the usual avenues.

21st Century Boards of Education

December 10, 2004

As I get ready to start my term in January I have been reflecting on the changing role of the Board of Education nationally. My guess is that some readers will say, “Oh, please! How boring!” But I have had my share of thinking time as I drive around the state the last few weeks visiting schools that have been placed on the Adequate Yearly Progress list. (That is where a school lands if it does not improve student achievement after being on the “Watch List…” or first warning.) I’ve been as far as the Canadian border, so have had some windshield time to reflect. I’d like to share some (not all!)of the findings in a (relatively) recent publication “School Boards at the Dawn of the 21st Century.” http://www.nsba.org/site/docs/1200/1143.pdf
