What do they have in common? They represent change, and sometimes we hate it. I work at the Minnesota Department of Education in Roseville, and no less than three people have asked me today about the closing of the Ole Store. While nobody has asked about WCAL, the sentiment is still there. Change happens, but now what? Bob Stangler made the call to close down the Ole Store. I’m sad about that, but Bob had the facts and knew what it took to keep that building open. I respect that.
As a Northfield School Board member, I must remember this while we plow ahead with budget reductions. It is not easy to have programs reduced or eliminated. It means real things to real people, sometimes even the loss of a job.
The job of a board member is to back up far enough to see a bigger picture. Will this budget cut mean a better program for kids next year? Will the elimination of this position guarantee more dollars for whole system? Will kids benefit from the actions I take today? I hope fellow bloggers let me know what their priorities are.
